The system then compares the EL of the encounter to the Average Party Level (APL) of the player characters to determine the encounter’s difficulty, ranging from trivial to overwhelming. As an illustration, a party of four characters at level 5 might face a group of monsters with a combined EL of 7 to provide a challenging, but manageable, encounter.
